Description

Operational Details
Stevedoring (longshore workers), transfer cargos throughout dock areas onto and from ships and other vessels. The activity is undertaken by cargo handling companies, shipping agencies and shipping lines.

Stevedores operate industrial trucks, tractors and other mobile equipment to transfer cargo, such as containers, crated items, automobiles, and pallet mounted machinery, around the dock. They also operate winches and other hoisting devices and may operate mechanical towers to load and unload. Other responsibilities are rigging, lashing or shoring of cargo onboard the vessel, opening and closing hatches and cleaning the holds of ships.

Barging involves the transportation of products by a flat bottomed vessel that is designed to operate in canals, rivers, or in smaller lakes that do not produce large swells or waves. They may be used to haul coal, wood products and other bulk items. This industry may also include other forms of water transportation such as ferrying or freight hauling.
