Operational Details
Domestic workers provide light duty cleaning services to homeowners. They sweep, mop, wax and polish floors, dust furniture, vacuum carpeting, clean area rugs, draperies and upholstered furniture. They make beds, change sheets, distribute clean towels and toiletries, clean, disinfect and polish kitchen and bathroom fixtures and appliances. They may also wash and clean windows, empty trash containers and generally perform any household chores assigned by the client.
A babysitter is usually employed throughout the period the parent or parents are not available to look after the children. It involves feeding, caring and generally being physically present for the children throughout the day or evenings.
A nanny provides the same services as a babysitter, with the exception, they are also full-time companions to the children and provide training for the children on everything from basic life skills, appreciation for the arts, to some educational instruction. The nanny is employed around the clock and consequently receives room and board.
A private homeowner must apply for voluntary coverage for the workers (who are not employers in their own right) they hire to perform personal services. As homeowners, they are not recognized as employers under the Act.
