Operational Details
Humane Societies and the SPCA are responsible for protecting and caring for abandoned animals,
preventing animal cruelty, improving animal protection and promoting the humane
treatment of animals. These organizations care for homeless, neglected and
abused cats, dogs and other domestic animals. Reuniting lost animals with their
owners and rehoming pets is a large aspect of these organizations. In the event
of animal cruelty and neglect an investigation will be performed and charges laid
where necessary. These organizations also enforce city animal by-laws to
protect the people and animals within communities. Vet assessments and
procedures such as lifesaving and corrective surgeries, spaying/neutering,
microchipping, vaccines and medications are among the services provided or
arranged. Cremation services may also be offered or arranged. Animal boarding is the business whereby domestic animals
are cared for while in the absence of their owner. Day programs (dog daycare)
to overnight boarding may be the services offered. Animals cared for through
the night are placed in a kennel enclosure for sleeping and may be brought out of
the kennel during the day for exercise and assessment. There is a
responsibility of the workers to monitor the pets and notify the owners of any
concerns. Veterinarian visits and the administration of medications may also be
required. Animal obedience/behavioral training, agility training, animal sitting, and dog walking are also included within this classification and may be
offered in conjunction with the boarding or as separate specialties.
