Description

Operational Details
The Act does not cover sporting events or athletes. However, it does cover the administrative and maintenance workers.

Sporting clubs include a number of venues such as ice hockey and figure skating, soccer, gymnastics, judo, tennis, badminton, and so on. Most are private clubs with limited membership. However, public facilities such as skating rinks, curling rinks, swimming pools, golf courses and ball parks will rent out their facilities to the general public, or charge a fee to the user.

A roller skating rink qualifies as a venue.

Included in this industry are private golf clubs who operate exclusively for their members. However, the public can participate by being a guest, or a prospective member, even though a higher green fees is charged. Most venues do allow clubs exclusive rights to play during certain time periods and they may pay a flat fee for the right. However, none can survive without the general public being allowed to use such facilities. The one exception would be a professional sports team with exclusive rights to a facility. Even then, it is usually only seasonal.

Amusement parks are set up and operated by maintaining and repairing equipment, and cleaning around the grounds. Some examples are miniature golf, go-cart tracks, etc. A fee is charged to the user to participate. General repairs include, painting, repairing, and maintaining equipment and playground or entertainment equipment and fixing fences, gates, walls, or any other obstacles that allows the operator to maintain control over who uses the facility.

Bingo halls are set up to charge a fee to the public for playing bingo cards, but the activity covered in this industry refers to the operation of the hall, which includes the renting out of the facility to service clubs and charitable organizations. Included in this industry is the cleaning and maintenance of the building and its contents.

Workers in this industry collect tickets, schedule use of the facility and its activities, admit people into the venue or onto the course, assist patrons by providing the necessary equipment and tools to participate and receive them when they are finished. They may also issue score sheets, rent bowling shoes, skates, golf clubs, tennis rackets, etc. They may also supply security to ensure patrons are using the equipment properly and safely, as well as ensuring the event or game is finished in a reasonable length of time so it does not infringe on other participant's time in the event or game.

Administration and maintenance covers the above activities, but does not cover those involved in the sporting event. A golf instructor is allowed to accompany a golfer and provide momentary instruction on the course and may also offer teaching instruction to groups. However, it does not cover his participation in competitions or in just playing the game for recreation. This applies to all instructors, but does not cover hockey coaches or volunteers.
