Description

Operational Details
Camps are operated by both non-profit, charitable organizations and those operated for profit. Church camps, Kiwanis and Lions Club, etc. are examples of charitable and non-profit camps. They purchase property, develop it, and provide volunteers who administer the camps. Major maintenance is undertaken by the organizations running the camp. However, those who use the camps are responsible for daily chores and daily maintenance. Paid staff may be involved in overseeing the camp operations and ensuring no damage is sustained. Private camps may include a club that operates for their own membership such as sun worshipers etc.

Camps for profit may be roadside camps that provide trailer stalls, shower facilities, water and trailer dump sites. Most of the camps provide firewood for their tenants and in the case of charitable organizations and non-profit organizations the fee charged is usually used to replace or maintain equipment, grounds and buildings. Occasionally non-members may use the sites, but are charged a user fee above what the members would be charged.

Lodges are operated similarly to a hotel, but in natural or more remote locations. They are rustic buildings often made out of logs and unfinished woods. The lodges provide meals and sleeping accommodation. Often they are adjacent to a lake and recreational facilities may or may not be owned by the lodge. Lodges are often used by corporations and organizations as a retreat facility or for corporate planning sessions and seminars. Because they are away from high traffic areas they are more valuable as places to rest up and relax. Another major use of lodges are fishing and hunting. Both types of lodges offer accommodation, as well as the opportunity to use their equipment and guides to hunt and fish. In most cases, the patrons return each night to the lodge for sleeping accommodations.

Resorts often operate on a seasonal basis, similar to a lodge. They provide accommodation and meals. However, what attracts the patrons are the recreational activities they offer. Canoeing, whitewater rafting, tennis, volleyball, and golfing are some of the activities offered. In some cases, instruction may also be offered (i.e. tennis and golf). Daily trail rides may also be offered and a trail boss and his or her helpers saddle the horses, assist the patrons on and off the animals, and generally look after the welfare of their clients until they return to the resort.

Outfitters plan itineraries or trips for clients, arranging for their transportation from the main camp or site to a hunting, fishing or recreation area. They assemble the necessary equipment and supplies, such as camping gear, rafts, life jackets, fishing tackle, ammunition, hunting equipment, and food. They also arrange and provide sleeping quarters such as tents, tarps, sleeping gear and cook tents for the clients.

Outfitters lead and escort individuals or groups and advise on safety and emergency measures, techniques and use of equipment. They also are knowledgeable about hunting and fishing regulations and provide clients with whatever transportation is required on the trip. Outfitters are most commonly hunting and fishing guides. Since most of the activities are in more remote areas, horses, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and swamp buggies are required. The outfitter provides and maintains this equipment and when necessary, rents any needed equipment for the clients.

The planning and preparation of meals is also included in this industry, and may involve the preparation and packing of lunches. Most of the trips or excursions are for more than just one day and may last up to three weeks. Fees are charged on a per trip basis. The transportation to and from the outfitters main site is the responsibility of the client.
