Operational Details
Veterinarians operate animal clinics and generally handle, restrain, and care for animals undergoing surgery. The veterinarian and the assistants perform radiography and other laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis of animal health problems. The surgery is performed by the veterinarian. An assistant prepares the surgical equipment and administers and monitors anaesthetics.
Veterinarians prepare and administer medications and vaccines. They conduct specialized procedures such as dehorning and hoof trimming. They also counsel clients on animal health care and conduct and assist in laboratory research.
Field calls may be made at farmer's and rancher's premises. Veterinarians may treat sick or injured animals by administering vaccines or medications, prescribe future prescriptions, set bones, dress wounds and put animals down by a lethal injection. (i.e. blackleg, anthrax, other contagious diseases).
Veterinarians advise clients on feeding, housing, breeding, hygiene and general care of their animals. They also enforce government regulations in disease control and food production, including animal or animal based food inspection.
Animal sample collection is included because it involves working with an animal, making an incision, inserting a tube and withdrawing blood and serum. It does not include any lab work and is performed in the field.
