Operational Details
Corral and feed lot cleaning, including manure spreading all involve the use of mobile equipment, such as a tractor with a bucket or a front end loader. The equipment is used in the confines of a corral or feed lot. A wagon or manure spreader may be used to pick up animal waste for distribution in adjacent fields.
Trucks may be used to haul the manure and it may also be transported to other sites. This industry does not include the disposal of liquid waste from sump pits and septic tanks.
Mowing right-of-ways, when done as a business, involves clearing underbrush, trees, and weeds from powerlines, oil leases, plant sites and parkland areas. Another name for this is vegetation control. It may include hand slashing, using power saws or mowing with a vehicle equipped with cutter heads. Spraying may also be done to control weeds and underbrush. This is accomplished by using a vehicle equipped with chemical tanks, pumps and sprayers. Employers in this industry do not cut the initial right-of way, but keep them free or clear by controlling undergrowth and weeds. The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure plans mowing programs (includes ditch mowing and hay salvaging) annually usually between July and fall.
Custom rock picking is done as a business by employers who use rock picking machines that are towed behind a farm tractor. The rocks are picked up by the machine and transported to a central location and either the farmer takes responsibility for the disposal of the rocks, or a loader and truck is hired to haul them away. This industry does not include ranchers or farmers who help each other by borrowing equipment, or lending a hand when they have some spare time.
