Operational Details
Extruded aluminum and glass are cut to required lengths, and the glass is placed or sealed into the aluminum frame. Sliding doors are also assembled and includes the setting of glass into full length frames that slide past each other on fixed tracks.
Workers use large flat surfaced work benches or tables and two or more workers are involved in cutting the glass to size initially. Forklifts move boxed or crated glass into the work area from which individual pieces of glass are removed, one at a time.
The glass may be clear, smoked, or coloured, depending on the customer’s need. The frames may be custom built to size and beveled, tempered or several panes of glass can be added to a single window. The standard is double pane, but triple pane glass has become more popular in northern climates.
Wooden or metal clad doors are received as blanks and may include: pocket doors, French doors, companionway doors, interior and exterior doors, etc. The glass is installed by employers in this industry and incidentally holes may be drilled for hardware.
