Description

Operational Details
Boat and canoe manufacturing begins with a design or pattern. The pieces are the cut, shaped or joined or assembled using hand or power tools. Prefabricated parts, ribs, reinforcing fiberglass are also components in the manufacturing. Boats and canoes can also be assembled, using a mold, in which fiberglass and other materials are poured. Once cooled, the mold is removed and a hull is produced, which can then be painted and outfitted.

Decks and hulls of boats are caulked and may be fiberglassed, using layers or cloth and resins. Trim, rudder, seats, and engine mounts are installed. Carpentry tools, powered and hand planes, knives, saws, etc. are used in the assembly process.

Once assembled the boat or canoe is spray or hand painted with a marine spar varnish or other waterproofed materials.

Canoes may also be built out of cedar and includes the lamination of several pieces of cedar, which are glued together, to form the hull of the canoe. The stripping is glued or fastened to wooden ribs, placed from the bow to the stern. Waterproof varnishes or paint is applied to the finished product.
