Hospitals include acute care or active treatment facilities, as well as extended care and long term facilities for those convalescing and requiring extended periods to recovery from an illness or injury.

Integral to any hospital is the diagnosis and treatment of patients, from those who are registered as emergency patients as the result of an accident or spontaneous injury or illness, to elective surgery, scheduled operations, etc.

Services include, but are not limited to, ambulance transportation, emergency care, surgery, post- surgery care, laboratory testing, radiology, pediatric care, psychiatric services, dental surgery, pharmaceutical services, medical research, etc. Support services include: maintenance, housekeeping, laundry, cafeteria services, dietary care, etc.

Psychiatric or mental health services are also included in this industry. Services provided are either short or long term and include: inpatient treatment for acute cases, forensic units for the criminally insane, out-patient care for those being returned to the community, and extended treatment for those chronically ill.

Extended and long term facilities are usually used for those who require assistance and rehabilitation before health is restored. It means physiotherapy, learning to walk with artificial limbs, use of wheel chairs and walkers, programs for those with heart attacks, etc. Often, older patients who are weakened by an operation are transferred to long care facilities where the nursing involved is less critical than in an active treatment hospital. Patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease may be placed in these facilities for an extended period of time until drug therapy allows for their release to their families or transferred to a nursing home.
