Operational Details
Diamond coring involves using an industrial diamond tipped cutterhead that is the cutting element of a core barrel assembly. The core barrel is a tubular device from 8 to 18 meters long which is run at the bottom of a drill pipe in place of a bit to cut a core sample.
Core samples are removed from the core barrel and the cylindrical shaped material retrieved from the formation is geologically analyzed. A coring service is an employer who exclusively offers this expertise to the industry.
Drill stem testing is a conventional method of testing a formation to determine its potential. A testing tool is attached to the bottom of the drill pipe and placed opposite the formation to be tested, which has been isolated by placing packers above and below the formation. Fluids in the formation are allowed to flow up through the drill pipe, allowing a measurement of the rate and volume of flow as well as sampling fluids at the surface.
