Operational Details
Oil and gas companies or explorers often hire oilfield trained technical consultants, as opposed to engineers, to oversee the work of various programs, including the seismic, drilling or production phase of a contract.
The managers or supervisors do not become involved in any hands-on way, except that they are authorized by their employer to recommend the hiring and firing of subcontractors who are not performing, or who are at odds with the program in place. An ex-tool push or drilling platform foreman with many years of experience is a good candidate for this job.
The manager or supervisor brings to the table his or her expertise and knowledge. In some cases, the supervisor may authorize payment to the subcontractor, or hire other trades or services, without permission of those on the site. Their authority comes from the condition of the contract they sign with their employer.
The oilfield managers or consultants are paid on a per diem or length of contract basis, plus expenses. The reason for this market niche is because oil and gas companies do not have need of their services year around and are unwilling to pay benefit packages for those who are only needed seasonally.
Should a building or property owner hire a construction supervisor to act as their project manager that service would be classified in the construction industry. That is: unless the individual; or employer is a consulting engineering firm.
