Operational Details
Clothing manufacturers may specialize in traditional clothing such as Indian or Eskimo ware. This type of clothing involves the process of cutting hides, stretching and hand sewing, along with adding decorative beadwork to buckskin and leather jackets, moccasins,. Mukluks, blankets etc. Other manufacturers may produce linen and cotton garments, using an assembly line. In all cases, the focus is to take raw products and add value to them by assembling, attaching, cutting, sewing, heat sealing etc. to produce outer wear and clothing. Protective clothing and wearing apparel is manufactured in the same manner as non-protective clothing, but chemically treated to resist fire, water and other contaminants. This process is done by immersing, or spraying the garments under controlled conditions.
Designers, draftsmen, cutters, sewing machine operators, buyers for the materials being used, and sellers are all part of the workforce. Equipment used includes: automatic cutters, hand cutters, sewing machines, heat sealers , staplers and pressing machines.
The sewing of tents and awnings is a similar process. However, the sewing machines are heavy duty and heavier thread is used. Besides stitching or gluing seams, ropes and grommets are inserted , and poles and pegs are purchased from suppliers to complete the tent package. Awnings are manufactured to standard sizes. Custom awnings are also produced. Commercial businesses use the majority of awnings, with a smaller volume being purchased by individuals.
