Description

Operational Details
Constructing concrete reservoirs entails following or creating a design and then hiring a subcontractor to do site preparation, delivering concrete, limestone and other materials or having concrete already batched, and then once forms are poured, the concrete is poured and once cured, the forms are removed. A similar approach is used for bridge approaches.

Cement used in reservoir and bridge construction requires reinforcing steel to avoid the deterioration of materials, and though waterproofed, the cracks develop and cause seepage.

A concrete pumping unit could also be contracted and this involves a cement truck and a pressure hose that pumps concrete considerable distances, thereby avoiding the need for wheelbarrows and manual labour. This is used when there are large volumes of concrete to be poured and there are elevations, or rough terrain to deal with.

Equipment used includes portable mixing machines, compactors, tampers, hand tools and other finishing tools, wheelbarrows, shovels concrete cutters, jack-hammers, scaffolding, ladders, and trucks for hauling materials. The employer may also have a large storage yard, with a shed to store equipment and materials and an office.
