Operational Details
Outdoor metal signage begins with the designing of, and preassembling the materials into signs that can be later erected for the customer. Materials include molded and sheet plastics, sheet metal, angle iron, etc. The components are put together to form enclosures in which electrical wiring and light fixtures are assembled.
Wooden signs are usually constructed with a facing and backing with illumination coming from electrical fixtures attached over top of, or facing the signs. The surface is painted by spraying o brush to produce an advertising medium. Hooks are attached so it can be erected.
Neon and computer signs are also produced, using a similar process to metal sign fabrication. Portable signage that consists of a 4' by 8' or so plastic sign that is lite by low voltage wiring, is also part of the outdoor advertising industry, however, erection consists of hooking up the sign, which is trailer mounted, and delivering it to the prescribed site.
Tools used in fabricating the signs include table, jigsaws, scroll saws, pipe benders, soldering and welding equipment, paint brushes, sprayers, design and assembly tables, delivery trucks, ladders, and portable or truck mounted manlift.
If the signs are erected on a pole, a post hole digging machine may be subcontracted.
