Swimming pool contractors work from an existing blueprint, a design of the customer, their own design, or subcontract the design for their customers. When done in conjunction with the building of a pool, it forms part of the overall operations of a pool constructor.

There are several types of pools that are constructed including those made out of concrete, that is poured in place, vinyl panels, urethane liners and other materials designed to hold large volumes of water. Installation includes site preparation such as digging, bringing in sand and crushed gravel, setting forms into place, pouring concrete, finishing the swimming pool, plus running the necessary water and drain lines for the pool and connecting electricity for heaters, filterization, plus perimeter lighting etc.

A contractor specializing in pool construction may direct hire the workers and supply all the equipment, or choose to hire a backhoe operator to do the digging, a concrete finisher to do the more intricate work, a cement firm to deliver the concrete and electrical and plumbing contractors to install electricity and install the necessary pipe runs and plumbing fixtures.

Some incidental landscaping may be done in the immediate area surrounding the pool, and may include shrubbery, perennial plants, grass and decorative gravel. As part of the contract, occasionally the contractor will also install showers in a pool house, a jacuzzi or hot tub adjacent to the pool.

Pool maintenance usually consists of making repairs to cracks or heaves in concrete, or in patching liners. The after sales service component of the business is basically warranty orientated. Once the warranty is off, the customer can chose a variety of contractors who can repair the pool.
