Operational Details
Neon signs begin with constructing or assembling a box made out of sheet metal, which is reinforced by angle iron. Any necessary wiring or light fixtures may be placed within, or in the case of neon signage, the glass is heated in a forming machine, or extruded to the desired shape, whether it be numbers, letters or a caricature. The metal is being replaced with plastics, although the same type of box is used, the plastic is lighter and has more applications than the heavier metal framed model.
Designing the sign is an important part of this industry which offers an employs a graphics or commercial artist. Incidental installation of the signs is also allowed, as often there are engineering standards that must be met in the installation. For example, a heavy sign could not be erected on the side of a building or pole that could not withstand the weight under duress. Wind and other weather elements are taken into account when the signed is designed and bylaws require the signs be approved before installation can take place.
The neon sign manufacture may also supervise the erection of the sign being put up by a third party or subcontractor.
