Description

Operational Details
Airtankers or waterbombers are often converted World War II planes or specially built for the purpose of carrying large volumes of water or chemicals which can be dropped on top of a burning forest fire.

Pilots are commercially licensed in the province and fly in inclement weather, to deliver fire retardant materials to suppress a fire burn. In some cases, the water may be obtained near the fire by touching the fixed winged aircraft down on the water and through taxiing on the water, the payload is scooped up and then dropped over the selected area.

Waterbombers are usually contracted by the government, and in particular, by the forest service, when the forest fires occur on crown land. They may also be contracted by logging or sawmill companies if the fire is on their property.

Fueling, maintenance and repair, if undertaken by the business, is considered part of the overall operations.
