Childcare otherwise known as daycare, is the care and supervision of a child or multiple children at a time. Caregivers work within the context of a licensed daycare center or provide home-based care. Meals and snacks are often prepared and provided. Taking the children on outings to parks, libraries, and other interactive spaces is common. Typically, childcare centres provide supervision and instruction throughout the day, from the morning to early evening.
Before & after school programs provide child care for elementary and middle school youth when students are not at school, and parents are not at home. School-Age programs take place at schools, community centers, parks, daycare centers, and from family home providers.
A preschool or a playschool is a place where around 10-24 children spend 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours each day under the supervision of teachers or caregivers with early childhood education certifications or relative experience. Preschool is most commonly offered to children between the ages of 3 and 5 providing them with socialization and developmental skills prior to attending kindergarten.
Child development centres or early learning centres are places where families with young children can access reliable information, services and supports to help them raise healthy children. These centres offer drop-in programming with minimal to no fee. These programs are often run by trained professionals who have researched and studied the cognitive and developmental milestones of children. Within this setting, children engage in dynamic indoor and outdoor play. After school programming for older children or teens would be included in this classification.
