Coin-operated laundromats or laundries are operated in strip malls and high traffic areas. Equipment consists of heavy duty commercial washing machines and dryers.

Laundromat attendants replenish vending machines with detergents, provide change, explain operation of the machines to the customers, clean the laundromat, and arrange for the repair and maintenance of the dryers and washing machines.

Hospitals, hotels, and institutions have laundry facilities similar to commercial laundries, which are far more labour intensive.
