Operational Details
Public libraries are operated by Boards under the authority of the Library Act. They maintain large stocks of books, periodicals, newspapers, annual statements of public companies, records, audio- visual tapes, classic movie videos, instructional videos, and so on. All the materials have some cultural, artistic or educational value.
The operations of a library include the ordering and stocking of shelves on an ongoing basis. It also includes placing returned books back in their respective places, and cataloguing material into the correct categories, usually in numerical or alphabetical order. Books are checked out, usually by electronic recording devices. Books returned late are assessed a penalty. Funds received from the penalties are used to upgrade the material in the library. Libraries receive donations from foundations, universities, schools and private citizens. Of particular interest to libraries are items which have cultural or historical value (i.e . A first edition of Zane Gray’s works).
