Operational Details
A building mover may move everything from a residential single garage (16' x 16') to houses, barns and grain elevators. The process begins by using heavy hydraulic jacks to lift the building off its foundation. Timbers are used to shore the building up until it can be placed on a heavy duty trailer for transport.
To transport a building, it must be rolled or winched onto a trailer, which can vary, depending on the size of the building being moved. The trailers are specially designed and are multi-axeled so the weight can be evenly distributed.
Tractor-trailer units are used, similar to those who provide heavy haul in the trucking industry. Caterpillar-trailer units may also be used occasionally. If buildings are moved on public highways, and the buildings are large, the mover may contract the services of a pilot car operator who leads and/or follows the mover, forewarning the traffic on the highway there is a “wide load” being hauled.
Moving is classified with construction due to the labour intensification in readying the building for the move.
