Operational Details
Gravel pit operators operate out of areas that have large inventories of gravel embedded in the soil. Overburden is initially removed, and then the gravel is excavated by using power shovels and bulldozers. The coarse gravel has rocks that are far too large for commercial use. A gravel crusher is used that conveys the rock and gravel into a hopper which crushes and screens the material into a more uniform size. The crushed gavel is stockpiled within the pit and when required, is transported by gravel truck to the customer’s work site. Gravel pit operators offer high volume production that is used in road and dam site construction and cement manufacturing. Usually if only a few loads are required, such as at a private residence, the gravel would be ordered from a gravel hauler, not from a gravel pit operator.
Asphalt manufacturing involves hauling asphalt products to the processing plant. Gravity or pumps are used to convey the petroleum or bituminous products into storage facilities until it is to be used. Then the bitumen pitch, sand and gravel are transported by a front end loader to the batching plant, and into a large mixing vat or drum. There the aggregate is heated and batched. It is then poured or conveyed into tanker trucks and transported to the construction or roadway site.
Clay pits are operated much the same as a gravel pit. However, crushing is not required. It is basically an open pit operation that uses power shovels and loaders to remove the ore and load it onto trucks or railcars for shipment.
