Description

Operational Details
Excavating as a business ,means the employer specializes in the digging and preparation of cellars, basements and foundations. Equipment used include caterpillar tractors, backhoe, loader, power shovel, etc. Some of the dirt is kept for landfill and the clay is hauled away, usually by the contractor’s own trucks.

Excavators transport their equipment on flatbed or gravel trucks. If a gravel truck is used, it may also be used to remove unwanted waste materials from the excavation worksite. Some incidental gravel may be hauled in by the contractor as well.

Holes are excavated for the purpose of pouring a foundation (undertaken by a concrete or building contractor). Once the foundation is poured it becomes a basement. At this stage the excavator backfills the foundation and compacts the dirt around the concrete or wooden walls. A cellar is basically a dugout or hole upon which a building is set.

Other employers in R11 may also do incidental excavating, however, it is only one of the many activities undertaken as an earthmover, landscaper, etc.
