Operational Details
Protective coatings
and wrapping are applied to various types of equipment and materials (e.g., oilfield
and pipeline pipe), which are sent to a specialized facility so it can be
prepared for application of special coatings and wrappings.
The process of coating and wrapping is a highly automated process and the
purpose of this is generally to protect the items from the environment, corrosive
action and to insulate them. In the case of pipe
coating and wrapping, pipe is usually shipped directly from the manufacturer to
a coating and wrapping facility. The pipe is offloaded by a forklift or
front-end loader, sorted and offloaded in a pipe storage area. When the pipe is
required by the customer and the specifications are made known, the pipe is
transported by a yard loader into the coating and wrapping facility. Regarding pipe coating,
the pipe is initially cleaned by chemicals or high-pressure blasting. It is
then moved by a conveyor system and a series of rollers into a coating machine.
At various stages of the process, pipe inspectors (most often the customer’s
representative), oversee the coating to ensure it is of the proper thickness
and composition.
The wrapping process follows a similar route to pipe coating. Wrapping machines
are used to wrap thick walled insulation paper or treated paper around the pipe.
Once this process is complete and the pipe has been approved by the inspector,
it is loaded for transportation.
