Operational Details
Woodwork and manufacturing of wood products includes the cutting of materials to specifications, assembling and finishing the product. Assembly may involve the gluing, nailing, screwing or clamping a number of pieces or components together hat make up the total product. Finishing consists of planing, sanding, scrolling, filing, polishing, or painting the product.

Usually the bigger shops have large inventories of materials on hand such as plywood, speciality lumber and hardware. This is necessary because of the high volume of products manufactured. Equipment used includes woodworking tools such as chisels, planes, scrapers, knives, skil saws, radial arm saws, large table saws, jointers, biscuit makers, jigsaws, band saws, scroll saws, woodworking lathes, coping saws, dadoing tools, and several hand tools, used to produce a hand crafted look. A woodworking lathe is used to turn spindles for railings, columns, pillars, etc.

Millwork by definition, refers to any building material that is the end product of a planing mill, or a woodworking shop. Included are doors, windows, door frames, mantels, panels, molding, trim, cabinets, etc. It is not applied to flooring or siding.

Pallet manufacturing is a simple process of cutting strips of lower grade lumber (usually 1 x 4s’), and nailing them to a 2 x 4 platform, or by nailing cross members diagonally onto the top of a number of 1 x 4s. This activity may also be undertaken by larger warehouse type operations or by home improvement centres as one of many services they offer.

Installation of products by a woodworking or carpentry shop usually involves setting into place products they have manufactured. Items include windows, doors, kitchen cupboards, china cabinets, islands for kitchens, Employers in this industry do not usually have separate installation crews, but it is only one of many assignments workers are given.
