Operational Details
Trailer manufacturing in this industry refers to industrial and utility trailers that are fabricated, using a welding process for the under carriage and structural frame. Sheet metal products may be used as a skin, or in non-weight bearing applications. Wood, plastics or other construction materials may also be used to complete the trailer. Usually these materials are used for the decking, roof, and siding. (Trailer wheels and running gear are also attached to the under carriage so the home may be moved from its semi-permanent location.)
Mobile home manufacturing begins with the fabrication of the under carriage, which is constructed out of I beam steel or a heavy gauge angle iron. It may also be used for structural members and for reinforcing the walls and roof. Wood or light gauge steel studs are used as structural members for the sides and roof, and are clad with either aluminum, other lightweight decorative metal products, or vinyl siding. It is insulated, and either wall board, decorative wood panelling or gyproc is used in the interior. The structure is wired, much the same as a traditional residence, plumbing installed, flooring materials applied to the floor, decorative tiles added and electrical wiring and appliances are installed.
The sale of a mobile home may also include the delivery of the structure to the customer. Incidentally the home may have its running gear removed, and/or plywood skirting and insulation are placed around the base of the home.
Equipment used in the manufacturing of trailers and mobile homes include: welders, sheet metal shears, slitters, steel brakes, table and radial arm saws, assorted power and hand tools. Electrical, plumbing and ceramic tile tools are also used.
