Description

Operational Details
The manufacturing of asphalt begins with the purchasing of chemical ingredients and compounds, usually petrochemicals in bulk, and they are then processed by mixing or blending the product with liquids and powders, according to a formula, to produce a homogenous substance in a liquid state.

The process requires storage tanks, mixing vats, agitators and may also involve using grinding machines and low heat is used to ensure proper blending of the ingredients. Once blended, they are drawn from the vats, packaged or containerized.

The operations may also include research and analysis conducted in a laboratory setting. Storage includes the stacking or setting of the product in a warehouse for shipment to market.

This process is similar to petrochemical manufacturing, except that there isn’t the focus on pressure vessels, towers, using extreme temperatures and pressure and molecular re-structuring.

The difference between the manufacture of asphalt in this subcode and the batch plants in R11-08 is that the employers in Class R, Road Construction and Earthwork operate these plants in conjunction with the building or paving of roads. And hauling of the product to the roadways is integral to the overall operations.
