Villages are considered to be an urban municipality and are incorporated under the Municipal Government Act. A village is comprised of a population of less than 500. The operation of a village is almost exclusively an administrative function.
The village provides local government which collects taxes, maintains utilities such as water, sewer and garbage removal. The village administration is responsible for maintaining roads, sidewalks, parks and public facilities. Villages may also provide library services, building inspections, policing and a fire department, etc. Firefighting is usually undertaken by local volunteers however the village may have its own fire truck and facility to house it in.
A village may employ or contract tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers and heavy equipment operators.
Village administration may include a treasurer, administrators, public works employees and general maintenance staff.
