Operational Details
Building supply stores primary activity is selling dimensional lumber. Often lumber products must be cut to size for the home builder or renovator. Large volumes of lumber are handled and shipped from the supplier and off loaded, usually from a tractor/trailer truck unit, or rail car. Forklifts and loaders are used to handle pallets and bundles of lumber. Individual pieces are taken off the pile by a yard worker. Lumber is also loaded onto a customers truck or vehicle. It is common to deliver products to the customer as part of the sale, or a nominal fee is charged to deliver the more heavy items to the customer. Building supply stores have order counters that serve customers who are ordering building supplies.
