Operational Details
Movie theatre operations includes the rentals of movies from the producers and showing the film for a fixed price, usually a ticket sold at a wicket or booth, prior to entering the performing area. Employees maintain and clean the building, sell tickets and operate a concession stand. Some vending machines may also be on site, which are re-filled by the employees as well. Advertising may be sold to interested businesses and shown as commercials prior or after the main feature has been shown.
Live theatre includes almost all of the same activities of a movie theatre, the only difference is that live theatre has changes rooms and employees may be called upon to serve the actors by delivering beverages and sandwiches to their dressing rooms. In addition, prop personnel, make p artists are also employed.
Often live theatre has benefactors who financially assist the arts by donating time and funding to its operation. This might include guaranteeing, or paying down a mortgage, paying for high profile actors to star in their productions etc.
Most movie theatres in recent years are now operated by chains who either operate interprovincially or internationally. Privately owned theatres are now few and far between. Live theatres are usually operated in urban settings, with sponsors being different levels of government or sponsored by the business and arts communities. Many volunteers are involved with live stage productions and these people are not part of the operation of a theatre, which is basically operating the building itself. Producing and performing plays are part of the arts.
