Piano tuners are hired by private home owners, schools, community leagues or institutions to come on location and tune the piano by adjusting or tightening the strings.. Uprights and grand pianos, and harpsichords are tuned, with the piano tuner using a tuning fork which is either digitally, electronically, or mechanically run, so that sounds can be faithfully reproduced on pitch.

Repair is usually redistricted to the replacement of piano strings and key replacement ivories . Occasionally, the piano tuner will purchase or resell a piano, however, it is incidental to the overall operations.

Piano tuning is usually a one person operation, but can include other family members or employees working by territory throughout the province.
