Operational Details
A tailor is the mens counterpart of a seamstress who alters ladies clothing. New and used clothing is taken into the shop and the customer is measured and fitted. The material is then cut to length and width and sewn to the customer’s specifications. A tailor or seamstress will do some custom sewing for a customer by selling a bolt of cloth and custom making a suit or dress. Seldom are these shops deal with exclusive labels, instead the develop their own patterns, or use those which can be bought from suppliers.
Tailors and seamstress shops are usually family run, or small operations of 2-3 workers. They operate in strip malls, shopping malls and as speciality shops near garment and wearing apparel shops.
A sewing machine shop sells the machines to the general public. Often sewing accessories such as thread and materials are sold as well. In some cases, sewing lessons are given and demonstrating the sewing machines is an ongoing part of the operations. Customers may also bring in their old machines for repair and newer ones under warranty may be fixed by the shop (if they are an authorized dealer and repair shop), or sent back to the manufacturer. A replacement is usually loaned out by the shop where the original machine was purchased.
