Description

Operational Details
Heavy equipment installers usually install a manufacturer’s product, or will supply and install their own product. Equipment and machinery are delivered to the construction site and extend periods of time are needed to assemble all the components and parts. Commissioning of the equipment is normally part of the installation contract.

Equipment installed includes: boilers, turbines, condensers, fly ash collectors in power plants, water and filtration systems, conveyors systems, pressure vessels, industrial scales and weighing devices, compressors, mining and oilfield equipment, forestry equipment such as chippers, gang saws, and other mill and pulp and paper equipment etc. Structures built includes: power stations, water towers, soils, water and sewage plants, pumping stations, treater houses, chimney stacks, micro-wave and TV towers, dragline and heavy crane erection.

Industrial plant erection is composed of approximately 65% process piping, 22-25% equipment and machinery, and the balance are the structures housing the equipment.

A trade involved in process piping is "B" pressure welder who is qualified to weld pipe and fabricate pressure vessels, as opposed to those who only have a welding ticket and are not qualified to weld products that are pressurized. Assisting the welder fitter is a pipefitter, usually from a plumbing background, who measures the angle of piping and instructs the welder where to use his torch. Other tradecrafts include: millwrights who align equipment in place by ensuring rotary engines and machines have no vibration. There are also electricians who wire the equipment, ironworkers and boilerfitters who install pressure vessels and tanks. Another tradecraft is an instrumentation mechanic who wires and installs pneumatic, electrical and digital measuring and control devices. The balance of the trades are heavy diesel mechanics, sheet metal workers, carpenters and general labourers, etc.

A crane operator (classified in R11-23) is subcontracted to hoist heavy equipment and machinery into place. Cement contractors are subcontracted to pour concrete foundations for structures, equipment, and machinery. Many other subtrades are contracted to haul the equipment to the site, to clean up after construction is complete, etc.

Most employers in this subcode will maintain a large work force, supplemented by calling workers out from union halls, or hiring staff as needed from job opportunity companies.

The removal and repair of equipment follows a similar process to installation and is considered part of this industry. Shutdown maintenance work is also undertaken by employers who do installations and a tear-downs. Some employers may own or rent the necessary scaffolding, as much of the work is done from elevations.

A typical mega construction project in this industry would be the installation of a turbine by one employer, the boiler and stream drum might be installed by another, tubing and other pressure vessels may be installed by yet another, and the piperuns could be installed by yet another employer.

Construction and installation at oil and gas wells and substations is as labour intensive, but undertaken using smaller equipment and machinery. Often one employer will be able to complete the entire project, using their own workers, and a cherry picker or medium sized crane. Sheet metal is also used to enclose the structure and spot welding, bolting and screwing complete the process. Millwrights and fitters are also involved in this type of construction.
