Operational Details
Metal bins are installed, assembling the product by bolting, friction fitting, or sport welding the components together. They are used usually for grain storage for feeding purposes or to segregate one kind of grain from another in the same facility. Granaries may be constructed out of wood or concrete.
A granary is a usually a one story with a single room in it, used to store grain that has been augured into it by a farmer. It is often set on wooden or metal skids (so it can be moved), and built from 2 x 4s, a wooden roof, shingles and wooden siding, painted with barn paint. The metal granary is bolted, spot welded or friction fitted together and is also set on a skid. It has its own preformed roof, and does not require siding or roofing materials as the metal forms the entire envelope.
Quonsets are metal buildings that are assembled on site in sections, and set on a concrete foundation. The metal sheets, or components are bolted and/or welded, to form structures that are fire resistant, and require less maintenance. Usually the buildings are galvanized and do not need painting. Doors are installed on rollers or slides when used for machinery or livestock. The components are delivered by a flatbed truck and installed using cranes or a truck mounted cherry picker.
Feed and storage sheds may be constructed out of wood or steel. Wood may be more economical, but feed storage sheds may leak after a period of time due to wood rot, moisture entering, or general exposure to the elements.
The materials are usually delivered by a flat bed truck, a small crane or cherry picker is used to lift sections of the buildings into place, and hand and power tools are used to complete the building process.
