Operational Details
A door and window business supplies and installs either their own product, or acts as a dealer for a manufacturing firm.
Employers either solicit business by phone, through advertisement or go door to door selling their product, usually with installation. Measurements are made and an estimate given. Once the contract is signed, the business dispatches a flatbed truck with special handling ability, to deliver the doors and/or windows to the customer. The materials are prefabricated and are set into pre-existing openings in the buildings or structures by nailing, stapling or gluing. The doors and windows are levelled and finally sealed with adhesive products. In some cases, insulation will be required and this is provided by the contractor.
Doors in exterior applications are usually solid core wood, vinyl, or metal and are insulated to withstand temperature changes. The door passage sets have heavier hardware and include security and safety latches. Interior doors are usually hollow and decorative, without security passage sets, except for bathroom doors.
Exterior windows are usually 2 or 3 panes and are designed to provide insulation against the cold and heat. Wooden or vinyl frames are the norm. Interior windows are often single pane and decorative.
Bay window installation may entail the renovating of a home by building a framework to house the window. When this is done in conjunction with window installation, it is part of this industry. Repairing and cutting of siding to house the new window may also be done and some incidental plaster patching is also allowed when the existing walls are damaged during installation.
