What sets this group of employers apart from welding or fabrication shops is that a welding shop operator often repairs, and/or works in field installation as a portable welder. This means the worker is exposed to weather and road conditions in isolated areas, without the benefit of a permanent power source or a controlled work environment.

This group of employers may prefabricate or fabricate on site. Fire escapes and stairs can be prefabricated and installed on site, and repairs are usually made on site alone. The amount of activity in the manufacture and installation is about 70-30%. A fabrication shop does not install and a welding shop fabricates approximately 40% of the time.
