Operational Details
Insulators read and interpret drawings to obtain specifications for insulation requirements and to select the type of insulation that is to be used. Insulation may be blown in, using a mechanical blower that is truck mounted. It is often used in residential home attics. Rock wool and rigid insulation are other types that are set into place, most often by friction fit, between rafters, wall studs, etc. Insulation is measured and cut to the prescribed size, and installed. Insulation is fitted around obstructions, and includes placing a vapour barrier over the insulation and sealing it, using a variety of tube adhesives.
Mechanical insulating involves wrapping, gluing, strapping, or clamping and placing insulated blankets, metal clad foam, fiberglass wrappings on pipes, equipment, or fixtures at industrial sites. The insulation is used to seal off areas or equipment from moisture, cold, heat or any other outside environmental factors. It can be clamped into place, glued, strapped or wrapped. Insulation is also used in commercial applications as a sound barrier, and can also be used in a sprayed form, such as foam, as a fire retardant.
Asbestos removal is an activity also within this subcode. Employer, using self-contained scot packs, or breathing apparatus, remove asbestos panels, loose filling or wrapping around pipes and equipment in a safe manner as airborne particles are known to cause lung problems such as cancer. The removal process takes longer than the initial installation and the asbestos must also be disposed of in a safe manner, using sealed bags and containers. Often asbestos is found at old plant sites, older commercial buildings and institutions. It is now being replaced by insulating materials that are less dangerous to the occupant’s health.
