Operational Details
Painting and decorating involves interior and exterior decorating, or sealing of siding, ceilings, walls, and other areas. In some cases, decorative painted murals might also be done. It also includes installing wall paper coverings, and other coverings that are decorative in appearance.

Painters and decorators make estimates and bid commercial; and industrial; work. Home renovating and new house construction usually involves hiring a preferred contractor. Painters prepare the surfaces to be covered, supply the necessary materials and cleaning agents. Scraping and sanding may also be undertaken, and the paint or fire retardant materials are applied using a sprayer, roller or paint brush.

On large jobs, scaffolding is assembled and erected. Painters usually set up their own because they need a more portable and moveable platform to work from than that supplied by drywallers and building contractors. Measuring, cutting and applying wallpaper glues may also be undertaken in conjunction with placing wall paper panels into place on interior walls and other areas.

Stippling is undertaken by some painters as well. This is a process of spraying a textured or pebbled material onto ceilings and heights that gives a decorative appearance. A variety of colours may be used, and can also serve the function of a fire retardant in commercial building applications.

Sandblasters use pressurized steam or hydro blasting equipment with lengths of hoses that can peel off unwanted particles from the exterior of a structure. It may also remove loose particles in a granite, or sandstone, exterior of a building. This process is also used in bridge repair, vessel, tank, industrial pipe, steelworks, or for any other structures that require cleaning.
