Operational Details
Chimney sweepers use hand tools, brooms, a wheel barrow and long handled brushes, or a brush on a cable that scrubs or shakes out soot, tars and other pollutants from in the inside of a chimney. Usually this is a residential function that includes using a ladder to climb up onto a roof and cleaning out a chimney that has been used to exhaust a fireplace, wood burning stove or coal burning furnace.
A chimney sweep may also clean out a fireplace from inside the residence and it usually means scrubbing or peeling off soot and scrubbing tars from the flue ( passage or exhaust for smoke and sparks).
The purpose of cleaning the chimney is to eliminate fire hazards.
