Saskatoon, Sask., May 29, 2023 – As workers and employers continue to transform and adapt to broad-reaching change, preventing serious injuries and fatalities, safety self-awareness and mental health continue to be at the forefront. These are three of the relevant workplace issues that will be discussed at the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board’s (WCB) 25th anniversary of its free, two-day Compensation Institute. The event is being held in-person at TCU Place in Saskatoon and more than 500 people have registered to attend.
“Compensation Institute is a unique opportunity to learn from each other to continue working together so we can all improve safety at workplaces across Saskatchewan,” says Kevin Mooney, the WCB’s vice-president of employer services and prevention. “We have an exciting lineup of world-class international and local presenters who will share their experiences and perspectives on a range of workplace safety issues and topics that our customers have let us know they want to learn about. We trust attendees at the event will leave feeling inspired and motivated, equipped with additional practical tools and resources to improve safety at their workplace.”
For more than two decades, this free, two-day event has been used as a platform for dialogue on safety, prevention and workplace health, to inform, to connect and to engage with WCB customers, staff, partners and stakeholders. Each year, topics are determined by feedback from WCB customers and previous years’ attendees.
This year’s topics include preventing serious injuries and fatalities, leadership through change and adapting to change, safety communication, safety self-awareness, mental health and burnout, and the Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards.
On day one today, participants will hear from a range of world-class presenters, such as:
- Curt Minard, a power line technician from Weyburn who was involved in an electrical contact incident in the workplace that resulted in him being electrocuted with 14,400 volts of electricity. Through determination, he was able to recover and went on to become a world champion hockey player and a Paralympic snowboarder for Canada.
- Dr. Tyler Amell, an internationally recognized leader of workplace health and productivity who specializes in health and well-being technology, data analytics and disability prevention. He is the chief health and strategy officer at MediKeeper, a wellness technology company, and faculty and registrar at Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences. Dr. Amell will share steps to prevent serious workplace injuries and fatalities.
- Dr. George Ayee, a bestselling author and highly experienced consultant, speaker, coach and trainer with more than 25 years of experience in leadership, change, transformation and organizational development. He has written about topics such as leading successful change and transformation and resilience in change. He will speak about transformational leadership for optimal results.
- Ted Schick, a corporate trainer and consultant with his own business, Schick Corporate Learning, since 2009. With more than 30 years of experience leading people , he will discuss the 10 commandments of safety communications at Compensation Institute.
The silver anniversary of Compensation Institute is being presented in person for workers, employers, WCB partners, key stakeholders and members of the media throughout the province. Some sessions during the event will be livestreamed.
Compensation Institute attendees will also learn about navigating the Saskatchewan WCB system, including the claims process, employer accounts and prevention of serious injuries.
